New Bedford Suspends Styrofoam Drop-Off Program Starting July 31

NEW BEDFORD — The city's Styrofoam drop-off recycling program will be temporarily suspended starting July 31, according to an announcement from the Department of Facilities & Fleet Management, cutting off an option residents have used to dispose of foam packaging.

New Bedford's Styrofoam drop-off recycling program will pause effective July 31 and remain suspended until further notice, the Department of Facilities & Fleet Management announced. The program operates out of the department's offices at 294 Liberty St. The city did not specify when the drop-off would resume.

New Bedford marked its deep Portuguese ties twice this week. On July 21, two first-year Portuguese naval cadets from the tall ship Sagres laid a wreath before the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator in the city, a ceremony captured in a SouthCoastToday.com photo gallery. The visit came two days after the Portuguese-American community turned out downtown for Atlantic Celebration Day on July 19, an annual event celebrating American and Portuguese pride, according to the Portuguese American Journal.
